'Team Nigel' rallies behind East Vancouver cat after complaint about feline folk hero
Supporters built a shrine and Instagram following around Nigel after a neighbour dispute, with the cat drawing five-star reviews and community backing.
A utility pole near Pender Street and Woodland Drive has become a shrine to Nigel, a local cat whose fame grew after a neighbor dispute. The site is now listed on Google Maps as a tourist attraction, and Nigel has gained a dedicated Instagram following.
The community movement began three weeks ago after Nigel's owners posted signs responding to a neighbor who left "angry" notes about the cat's alleged gluttony. The owners assured the resident that Nigel has a "warm home and plentiful food to come to."
Residents remain "Team Nigel," defending the feline against accusations of "Grand theft tuna" and "Known association with the East Van meowfia." Neighbor Marcin Owczarzak called the claims "unfounded, baseless" and described Nigel as "super friendly."
Locals are making pilgrimages to the shrine to meet the cat, who seems to bask in the attention. Beatriz Fantini said "it's just been cool to see the community rally together around him."
Nigel's Instagram account continues the movement online, with the page's creator calling themselves his "number 1 fan" and stating they created the account to uplift the community.
