Teachers vote down government's major pay offer
The 57.7% vote against the deal sends the union back to the bargaining table and raises the prospect of fresh strikes.
On Friday, Victorian Education Union members rejected the Allan Labor Government's pay offer, with 57.7 per cent of about 60,000 members voting against the proposal and 42.3 per cent supporting it.
Teachers demanded 35 per cent pay rises over three years, rejecting the government's 28 to 32 per cent offer over four years, while citing unmanageable workloads and inadequate school funding as key sticking points.
Union branch president Justin Mullaly stated, "AEU members have sent a clear message," as the 120-member Joint Primary and Secondary Council prepares to meet immediately to determine next steps.
The failed vote creates a political headache for Education Minister Ben Carroll and Premier Jacinta Allan five months before the election, as opposition spokesperson Brad Rowswell claimed the government is "out of touch."
With strikes previously on hold, union activists are organizing to confront the government again, as the AEU must renegotiate to address demands for better conditions and funding to avoid further school disruptions.
