Tea, an app for women to safely talk about men they date, has been breached, user IDs exposed

  • The Tea dating app announced on Friday, July 26, 2025, that hackers accessed approximately 72,000 user images from a legacy data system.
  • The breach impacted users who registered prior to February 2024 and involved images from a legacy system over two years old, with no indications that newer data was compromised.
  • Out of the images accessed, 13,000 consisted of user-submitted selfies or identification photos used for verifying accounts, while the remaining 59,000 were extracted from user-generated content such as posts, comments, and private messages within the app.
  • Tea stated that it responded quickly, enlisted trusted cybersecurity specialists, and confirmed that users’ contact details such as emails and phone numbers were not compromised in the breach.
  • The incident followed the app’s surge to the top of Apple’s App Store, leading Tea to assert it is taking every step to protect users and prevent further exposure.
