TD Bank settles human rights complaint by B.C. Muslim-Indigenous man
The settlement includes improved TD Bank training and a traditional Heiltsuk washing ceremony, marking a step toward corporate accountability, officials said.
- On Nov. 17, 2025, TD Bank settled a human rights complaint with Sharif Mohammed Bhamji that began with a May 2021 identity check at a Surrey, B.C., branch.
- Because bank staff questioned his Indian status card as `fake` after the May 2021 interaction, police later visited his home, and a human rights complaint followed.
- TD Bank says it has improved training and status-card procedures to the satisfaction of all involved and issued apologies to Mr. Bhamji, his family, and the Heiltsuk First Nation, spokesman Mick Ramos said.
- Participating in a washing ceremony, Bhamji and TD executives helped set a precedent for corporate accountability in Bella Bella on Sunday, according to Chief Marilyn Slett.
- Amid similar cases, Maxwell Johnson and the Heiltsuk Tribal Council settled with BMO after a 2019 incident, but arresting officers later backed out of a scheduled washing ceremony with the Vancouver Police Department.
