Taylor Swift’s ‘The Life of a Showgirl’ Album Too Close to Other Artist’s Work: Lawsuit
Maren Wade alleges the album title infringes her trademark rights, as CNN reports Universal Music Group is also named in the suit.
- On Tuesday, Las Vegas performer Maren Wade filed a federal lawsuit in California alleging that pop icon Taylor Swift's 2025 studio album, 'The Life of a Showgirl,' infringes on her trademarked brand.
- Wade's brand 'Confessions of a Showgirl' originated as a Las Vegas Weekly column in 2014 before evolving into a touring stage production; she federally registered the trademark in 2015, claiming Swift's album aesthetic too closely mirrors her long-established showgirl branding.
- Last year, the Trademark Office rejected Swift's application as 'confusingly similar' to Wade's existing mark, placing the singer on actual notice that her designation infringed on established rights. 'They continued using it anyway,' the lawsuit says.
- Wade's lawsuit alleges 'textbook reverse confusion,' arguing Swift's overwhelming commercial presence drowns out the senior user's mark, and seeks monetary damages plus a permanent injunction banning use of 'The Life of a Showgirl.'
- Last week, Swift won multiple awards for the album at the Music Awards, yet Wade's attorney Jaymie Parkinnen argued that 'a solo performer who spent twelve years building a brand shouldn't have to watch it disappear because someone bigger came along.
