Taylor Sheridan has never been to prison. His new book still maps how to survive it
- On Tuesday, Simon & Schuster announced it will publish How to Not Die in Prison, co-written with ex-prisoner Tom Nelson, on June 23, 2026.
- Taylor Sheridan, an Oscar-nominated writer and Yellowstone co-creator, chose to write about life behind bars out of morbid curiosity, researching prison politics and dangers and seeking firsthand input despite never being to prison.
- Mixing practical and darkly comic detail, the publisher describes the book as `a no bullsh*t, darkly funny survival guide to life in a maximum-security prison` covering riots, lockdowns, stabbings, hits, solitary, prison ramen, jobs, tattoos, and a toothbrush knife example.
- Next month Sheridan's movie deal moves from Paramount to NBCUniversal, and the NBCU contract has the potential to make Sheridan as much as $1 billion after Paramount's streaming rights error.
