Shannon Taylor wins Democratic nomination for U.S. House in Virginia's 1st Congressional District
Taylor, Henrico County’s top prosecutor, won about 53% of the vote in a seven-candidate race to challenge Rep. Rob Wittman.
- On Tuesday, Henrico County Commonwealth's Attorney Shannon Taylor won the Democratic nomination in Virginia's 1st Congressional District, carrying 53% of the vote with 94% counted. The Associated Press called the race less than an hour after polls closed.
- Leveraging a commanding fundraising advantage of more than $2.1 million, Taylor outpaced six other primary opponents. Candidate Jason Knapp, the next closest fundraiser, raised nearly $600,000.
- Unofficial results showed Salaam Bhatti with 20% of the vote, while Elizabeth Dempsey Beggs, Mel Tull, Tim Cywinski, and Ericka Kopp trailed with single digits. Throughout the district, Democratic candidates spent Tuesday canvassing precincts and speaking with voters.
- Taylor now prepares for the Nov. 3 general election against incumbent Rep. Rob Wittman, who has represented the 1st Congressional District since 2007 and won reelection by double-digit margins in every race.
- Redistricting in 2021 added parts of Henrico County and Chesterfield to the district, where voters narrowly chose Democrat Abigail Spanberger in the 2025 gubernatorial election. This political shift spurred Democrats to challenge the district's conservative history.
