You Could Be Owed Thousands by HMRC without Realising It - Here's How to Reclaim
Andy Wood says married couples, pension savers and workers who pay job costs should check for refunds worth more than £1,000 or almost £4,000.
Tax barrister Andy Wood has identified three areas where households may overlook potential refunds from HMRC: Marriage Allowance, pension withdrawals, and employment expenses.
Eligible couples can transfer £1,260 of their Personal Allowance to reduce tax bills by up to £252 annually, with backdated claims to April 2022 worth more than £1,000.
Between April and June 2026, HMRC processed 12,612 pension tax repayment claims, paying back a total of £50.35 million at an average of almost £4,000 per refund.
Employees who personally cover work-related costs such as specialist clothing or subscriptions may claim tax relief if their employer has not reimbursed them, though HMRC does not automatically know about these expenses.
Wood warns taxpayers to avoid firms promising guaranteed payouts, stating "applications can be made directly through GOV.UK without paying a claims company," as speculative claims can create further problems.
