Tarique Rahman sworn in as Bangladesh's PM after landslide election victory
Tarique Rahman and 212 BNP MPs were sworn in, marking the start of a BNP-led government with a two-thirds parliamentary majority tasked with broad reforms.
- On Tuesday, Tarique Rahman was sworn in as prime minister by President Mohammed Shahabuddin at the National Parliament complex's South Plaza with approximately 1,200 guests.
- The BNP-led alliance won at least 212 seats in the 300-seat Jatiya Sangsad, giving it a commanding majority, with more than 60 percent backing the July Charter in a referendum held at the same time as the election.
- Chief Election Commissioner A.M.M. Nasir Uddin administered the oath to 297 lawmakers, while Tarique Rahman quickly led MPs to the BNP Parliamentary Party meeting to finalise the Cabinet.
- Rahman unveiled a 49-member Cabinet including seventeen new ministers and twenty-four new state ministers, and he joins the Cabinet for the first time.
- More than 60 percent of the electorate approved the July National Charter, which the BNP leadership under Tarique Rahman will implement, shaping the legislative agenda in the coming months.
