Tanker Off Yemen Boarded by Armed People, Diverted Towards Somalia, UKMTO Says

UKMTO said six armed men took control of the tanker and redirected it toward Somalia as piracy incidents in the region have risen since April.

  • Pirates hijacked the Cameroon-flagged cargo ship LUTUF on Monday about 3 nautical miles off Marraya in Puntland, Somalia, carrying weapons bound for a Turkish military training facility in Mogadishu.
  • Eight pirates linked to the hijacking of the Sward moved the vessel toward the coast near Garmaal in Puntland's Dangoroyo district. The 10-member crew includes six Indians, one Turkish national, one Georgian, and two Serbian security guards.
  • Two Turkish-owned vessels later moved toward the scene while Turkish helicopters and drones monitored the area. Earlier, a small boat approached the hijacked ship to deliver supplies.
  • An airstrike occurred after the vessel returned to shore, killing four men and wounding two others. Circumstances of the strike, including whether those killed were involved in the hijacking, remain unverified.
  • The current status of the LUTUF, including the safety of its crew and the security of its cargo, remains unclear. Turkey has provided no immediate comment regarding the incident.
