Crucial Agreement Made in Tampa Bay Rays Stadium Deal in Tampa, Votes Next Week
The Rays would cover more than $1.2 billion and absorb overruns under the proposed plan, officials said.
On August 27, the Tampa City Council will vote on a $2.3 billion ballpark proposal at the Hillsborough College site, following a financial agreement finalized Friday between the City of Tampa, Hillsborough County, and the Tampa Bay Rays.
Projected costs include $180 million from the City of Tampa and nearly $800 million from Hillsborough County, while the Rays contribute more than $1.2 billion to secure their future in the region.
Councilman Bill Carlson introduced a revenue-sharing plan creating a fund potentially up to $2 billion over 35 years for infrastructure, as the Rays need four votes on the seven-member council to pass.
Hillsborough County commissioners will cast their own vote on August 28, with construction planned for a September 2026 groundbreaking to ensure the ballpark is ready by opening day 2029.
Should the deal fail, CEO Ken Babby warned the team could explore other options, as groups in Jacksonville and Orlando have expressed interest in bringing Major League Baseball to their cities.
