Tampa Bay Rays' new stadium proposal: What we know so far
The Rays aim to create a mixed-use stadium complex with new campus facilities, addressing parking and access issues, under a six-month negotiation period, officials said.
- Last week the Tampa Bay Rays signed a nonbinding memorandum with Tampa's Hillsborough College to pursue a multiuse project on a 113-acre Dale Mabry Boulevard site including new campus facilities.
- For many of the nearly 28 years since the Rays began, Tropicana Field's location and last year's Hurricane Milton damage prompted repeated talks and led to withdrawing from a $1.3 billion St. Petersburg stadium deal.
- The team has said it wants a roof to avoid rain delays and humidity, and the memorandum includes a six-month negotiation window addressing parking and access with Tampa, Hillsborough County, and planning experts.
- The new ownership group led by Patrick Zalupski finalized the purchase last September with Zalupski as control person and co-chair alongside Bill Cosgrove, while Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis said the state will not finance the stadium but may assist with infrastructure.
- Forced by the Trop's damage, the Rays played the entire 2025 season at Steinbrenner Field, drawing 786,750 fans versus 1,337,739 in 2024, while remaining under lease at the Trop through at least 2028.
