Takeout trash is piling up at Michigan universities. There’s no easy fix
Carla Iansiti, sustainability officer at Michigan State University, described the current waste situation due to takeout as "a nightmare" with rising waste challenges.
Students increased takeout dining habits during the COVID-19 pandemic when dining halls had reduced seating, and many have continued these habits afterward, according to Iansiti.

Nicole Berg from the University of Michigan reported a significant rise in takeout waste in student areas such as libraries, reflecting changes in dining patterns.
