Taiwan says its companies plan to invest another $20 billion in US
Taiwanese companies are planning another $20 billion in U.S. investments as AI orders drive new spending, the economy minister said.
- On Wednesday, Taiwan Economy Minister Kung Ming-hsin announced $20 billion in planned Taiwanese company investments in the U.S., driven by strong demand for artificial intelligence applications.
- The U.S. has pushed for increased Taiwanese investment as part of broader efforts to boost domestic semiconductor manufacturing, viewing Taiwan as a critical technology partner despite lacking formal diplomatic ties.
- TSMC announced in July a further $100 billion investment in Arizona, bringing its total planned U.S. investment to $265 billion; beyond TSMC, Taiwan identified additional companies ready to invest the $20 billion.
- Bill Frauenhofer, executive director of semiconductor investment and innovation at the Commerce Department, welcomed the announcement, stating the projects demonstrate "continued shared commitment to a secure, resilient and innovative semiconductor and electronics supply chain."
- While AI chip orders remain "extremely lively," President Donald Trump has previously criticized Taiwan for "stealing" American semiconductor business, a perception Taiwan's government says is unfair.
