Taiwan drills to test relocating arms production under Chinese attack

The 10-day exercise will also test drones, counter-blockade operations and 5,000 reservists as Taiwan prepares for a possible Chinese attack.

  • On Tuesday, Taiwan's Ministry of National Defense announced annual Han Kuang war games scheduled for Aug. 5–14, which will test relocating weapons production lines and converting civilian factories to sustain combat operations if Chinese attacks hit supply hubs.
  • Major General Lu Wen-yuan, head of the Joint Operations Division, stated the drills assume "Chinese forces use routine annual joint military exercises as cover for large-scale landing training, concealing plans to attack Taiwan while completing final assault preparations."
  • Exercises will simulate the wartime relocation of the Armaments Bureau's 202nd Arsenal in Taipei and mobilize civilian factories for "whole-system assembly," ensuring Taiwan maintains industrial output if primary military facilities are neutralized.
  • To test civilian communications under constrained bandwidth, Taiwan will deliberately slow mobile internet speeds during the 10-day drill, while the Navy and Coast Guard Administration conduct joint exercises to secure shipping lanes and protect critical supplies.
  • The All-Out Defense Mobilization Agency will call up 5,000 reservists during Tung-Hsin manpower mobilization drills, which occur concurrently with Han Kuang to strengthen combat effectiveness against potential threats across the Taiwan Strait.
