Taiwan computer chipmaker TSMC pledges another $100 billion to expand US chipmaking capacity

The chipmaker lifted annual revenue guidance and capital spending after reporting record quarterly profit on strong demand for artificial intelligence chips.

  • On Thursday, TSMC announced an additional $100 billion investment to build four new Arizona fabrication plants for advanced 2nm chips, raising the company's total United States commitment to around $265 billion.
  • Record quarterly net profit of NT$706.6bn and $40.2 billion in revenue fueled the expansion, as CEO Che-Chia Wei described global AI-related demand as "extremely robust."
  • Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick stated "President Trump's leadership is driving companies to invest in American manufacturing," emphasizing the investment follows a historic bilateral trade agreement intended to strengthen supply chains.
  • American Institute in Taiwan Director Raymond Greene welcomed the plan as "a powerful signal of the trust and confidence that defines the U.S.-Taiwan partnership," adding proximity enables TSMC to "move at market speed."
  • TSMC increased its 2026 capital expenditure budget to between $60 billion and $64 billion to sustain manufacturing expansion, as Wei expects AI-related demand to remain very strong until around 2029.
