Taiwan completes first undersea trial for domestically made submarine

  • On Jan. 29, 2026, Taiwan's Hai Kun , Taiwan's first indigenous submarine, completed its maiden submerged sea trial after departing Kaohsiung Harbor.
  • Amid heightened cross-strait drills, the trial advances Taiwan's armed forces deterrence and aims to protect vital sea lanes, while completion would release a $1 billion tranche frozen by the Legislature last year.
  • CSBC said staged submerged tests will include snorkel-depth checks at 10m to 20m, shallow trials at 50m to 100m, and deep dives from 100m, testing endurance, noise, sonar, combat systems, and simulated weapons launches.
  • After trials the shipbuilder will conduct technical evaluations to verify systems, then deliver the submarine to the Republic of China Navy for tactical assessment and handover.
  • CSBC Corporation Taiwan said the submarine programme used United States and Britain expertise, with the Hai Kun costing $37.9 billion, less than South Korea's $78.4 billion and Germany's $95.9 billion.
