Syria’s interim leader Ahmad al-Sharaa meets with Putin in Moscow
- Syrian President Ahmad al-Sharaa is scheduled to travel to Moscow, Russia on Wednesday to meet Russian President Vladimir Putin for talks on regional and international cooperation with a delegation including Syria's foreign, military and economic officials.
- Following last December's overthrow of Bashar al-Assad, Syria's new Islamist rulers have sought peaceful ties with Russia, which resumed engagement through Deputy Foreign Minister Mikhail Bogdanov in January and Syrian Foreign Minister Asaad al-Shaibani in July.
- Discussions will cover the future of Moscow's bases in Syria, including Tartus naval base and Hmeimim air base, with al-Sharaa planning to request al-Assad's handover, Reuters and Syrian officials said.
- After Moscow postponed a Russian-Arab summit due to the United States ceasefire plan for the Gaza Strip that took effect on Friday, SANA said al-Sharaa will still visit Russia on Wednesday.
