Syria reopens embassy in Libya after 14 years, as Damascus, Tripoli vow cooperation

- The embassy had been closed since 2012 after Libya's National Transitional Council recognized the Syrian uprising. Preparations to restore operations began last year, with a technical delegation raising the Syrian flag in August 2025.
- Expanded diplomatic representation will include a new Syrian consulate in Benghazi, Dbeibah and Al-Shaibani agreed. Talks also addressed security cooperation, counterterrorism, and unresolved financial dues between Libyan and Syrian institutions.
- Calling the meeting "a new chapter," Dbeibah noted it should be "based on shared interests, practical cooperation and addressing outstanding issues." Libya's rival governments separately signed a deal Sunday to hold national elections.
- These diplomatic efforts follow the December 2024 ouster of Syrian President Bashar Al-Assad, which ended 61 years of Baath Party rule. Libya remains divided between the Tripoli-based Government and an eastern administration backed by Khalifa Haftar.
