Syria forms panel to probe civilian attacks in Sweida violence
SUWAYDA PROVINCE, SYRIA, AUG 3 – The committee will investigate attacks on civilians and refer suspects to the judiciary within three months after clashes killed over 800 people and displaced tens of thousands, Syrian officials said.
- The Sweida province in Syria experienced deadly violence in July, with hundreds killed, tens of thousands displaced, and Syria's transition threatened.
- Syria's Justice Ministry formed a committee to investigate the attacks, uncover the circumstances leading to the Sweida events, and refer implicated individuals to the judiciary.
- A similar committee previously found widespread violations against civilians, including by security forces, resulting in over 1,400 deaths after sectarian violence on Syria's coast.
