Syria Calls for Independent Probe Into Sinking of Ship in Black Sea
Syria wants an independent investigation into the attack as Bulgaria ended the search after finding no survivors among the 10 crew members.
- On Thursday, the International Maritime Organization and Bulgarian authorities received a call from Syria to investigate the sinking of the cargo ship Alfa Watan in the Black Sea, which left 10 crew members missing.
- The Alfa Watan sank after a drone attack early Tuesday within Bulgaria's exclusive economic zone, 70 nm off the coast. Authorities discovered debris and 3 life rafts near the site but located no survivors.
- Mazen Aloush, director for international relations of the Syrian General Authority for Ports and Customs, questioned why Bulgarian search operations ended before the crew's fate was determined. The crew included 10 members total.
- President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky alleged a joint probe with Bulgarian forces confirmed Moscow carried out the strike. Bulgarian Prime Minister Rumen Radev announced procurement of 5 additional surface-to-air missile systems.
- Tensions persist as officials struggle to determine responsibility for the strike near Byala, with another vessel suffering fire damage in the same area. NATO member Bulgaria remains concerned about regional escalation.
