Syrian authorities arrest ex-officer accused of chemical weapons crimes
Authorities say the former officer oversaw sarin storage and production and supervised about 20 bombs used in attacks on Syrian towns.
- On Wednesday, Syrian authorities arrested Colonel Ahmed Habib Ali, a former officer described as a "chemical weapons expert" responsible for sarin gas depots during ousted President Bashar's era.
- Since the fall of Bashar in December 2024, authorities have arrested dozens of former regime officials to prosecute crimes committed during the country's 14-year civil war.
- According to the ministry, Ali "was responsible for sarin gas storage facilities and chemical manufacturing within Unit 417," supervising about 20 bombs weighing 250 kilograms used in 2013 and 2017 attacks.
- This arrest follows Syria's reinstatement into the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons last week, after the body stripped Syria of voting rights in 2021 for confirmed sarin and chlorine gas use.
- On August 21, 2013, the deadliest attack occurred in Eastern Ghouta, killing 1,429 people according to the United States government and human rights organizations.
