Swiss voters look set to reject proposal to change neutrality, poll shows
Nearly two-thirds of respondents opposed the neutrality initiative, and a second food security proposal also appears headed for rejection, the poll found.
- Swiss voters appear set to reject a proposal to redefine neutrality in a September 27 referendum, according to a poll published Wednesday. The initiative seeks to limit the country's ability to impose economic sanctions or cooperate with NATO.
- Backed by the right-wing SVP, the initiative aims to define neutrality as "perpetual and armed," barring participation in military alliances and third-country wars except during an attack or imminent threat.
- A survey of 13,154 people by 20 Minuten and Tamedia reveals 62% oppose the proposal, while only 32% support it; only SVP supporters favored the plan compared to all other parties strongly against.
- Co-President Benjamin Muehlemann of the FDP party warned that prohibiting support for international efforts would "strengthen the aggressors' camp," arguing Switzerland must stand for "peace, the rule of law, and democracy."
- A separate "secure food supply initiative" also appears set for rejection, with 65% of respondents against the measure and 31% in favor, as voters will decide on both proposals during the upcoming September 27 polls.
