Swiss President to Quit Government
- On Friday, Swiss President Guy Parmelin announced he will step down at the end of the year, citing a desire to make way for "new blood in these times of great uncertainty."
- After 11 years in government, the member of the Swiss People Party succeeded Eveline Widmer-Schlumpf in 2015 and moved to Economic Affairs in 2019. Parmelin has served twice as president.
- During his tenure, Parmelin managed the 2021 Covid crisis and negotiated free-trade agreements with India and Mercosur. Addressing media in Bern on Friday, he ruled out health issues while acknowledging diminished passion for the role.
- The announcement comes two weeks after State Secretary Helene Budliger Artieda said she would step down in March 2027. Parmelin will continue his duties until December 31 "at 11:59pm at the very latest."
- Warning that "nothing is ever guaranteed for good," Parmelin emphasized Switzerland must adapt to avoid falling behind, recalling a "rude awakening" in August 2025 following 35% US tariffs.
