John Swinney Rejects Calls for Independent Inquiry Into Murrell SNP Embezzlement
Swinney says Police Scotland’s criminal case is enough as senior SNP figures seek an independent review after Murrell admitted embezzling more than £400,000.
On Wednesday, Scottish First Minister John Swinney rejected mounting calls for a Holyrood inquiry, describing demands as 'politicisation' and insisting 'there can be nothing more detailed than a police investigation.'
After former SNP chief executive Peter Murrell admitted Monday to embezzling over £400,000 from the party over 12 years, the estranged husband of former First Minister Nicola Sturgeon faced calls for independent investigation.
Joanna Cherry KC, former SNP Westminster frontbencher, demanded an 'independent investigation into what occurred,' while ex-health secretary Alex Neil and Labour's Jackie Baillie called for senior lawyer oversight of party governance.
Swinney accepted that 'the trust of the SNP was breached by the criminality of Peter Murrell,' branding his actions 'totally unacceptable' and a 'betrayal of the party membership.'
Questions persist about how Murrell evaded detection for 12 years, as critics warn internal review cannot address oversight gaps; Murrell faces sentencing next month.
