Swimmer missing after being swept away in river on Vancouver Island

Search crews are using boats and rescue teams after a young woman was swept into a narrow gorge by powerful currents, police said.

  • A young woman went missing Sunday at Stamp River Provincial Park, about 200 kilometres northwest of Victoria, after being swept over a waterfall. Port Alberni RCMP confirmed the incident.
  • Witness Vera Elfstrom said the group set up about 30 metres above the falls, where the river funnels into a narrow gorge with water moving at over 60 kilometres an hour. The strong current swept the swimmer away.
  • Searching the water Monday, the RCMP, along with the Alberni Valley Rescue Squad and Arrowsmith Search, looked for the swimmer. As of the afternoon on July 6, the swimmer had not yet been located.
  • Although Stamp River Provincial Park remains open to the public, the trail nearest the waterfall is closed to allow search crews to "conduct their operations safely and effectively," the RCMP indicated.
  • This incident is the latest water-related accident in B-C since late June, following a boat sinking off Richmond and a drowning in Okanagan Lake. Multiple fatalities have been reported across the province.
