Boy Dies at Lake as UK Open Water Deaths Reach 10 Since Weekend
Police are searching for a missing young man after reports he entered the water, as emergency crews respond with rescue dinghies.
Kent Police recovered the body of a teenage boy from a pond in Swanscombe on Wednesday after emergency services responded to concerns for a swimmer at Galley Hill Road shortly before 3pm.
Record-Breaking temperatures reaching 35.1°C at Kew Gardens in England have prompted people to seek relief in open water, despite water remaining at winter temperatures of about 13°C.
The discovery marks the tenth open water fatality this week across the UK, including 12-year-old Junior Slater in Lancashire, 15-year-old Declan Sawyer in Lincoln, and 68-year-old Phil Crow in Cornwall.
Kent Police confirmed the death is not being treated as suspicious and a report will be prepared for the coroner, with support from Kent Fire and Rescue Service and South East Coast Ambulance Service.
Professor Mike Tipton, chair of the National Water Safety Forum, warns that charging into water at about 13°C triggers cold shock responses—gasping and uncontrollable hyperventilation—often preceding drowning.
