Swalwell says staffer flew to Colombia to return hearing aid to deported 6-year-old boy
Rep. Eric Swalwell's team flew to Colombia to deliver hearing aids to a deaf 6-year-old deported without them after his mother chose removal amid asylum claims, officials said.
- On Tuesday, Lesly Rodriguez Gutierrez, 28-year-old Hayward mother, and her sons, ages 5 and 7, were detained during a required ICE check-in in San Francisco and deported to Colombia by Thursday; the older child, Joseph Rodriguez, was removed without his hearing devices.
- The family fled Colombia four years ago; DHS says she has a final removal order dated November 25, 2024, but her attorney claims she was complying with an asylum and supervision order.
- Advocates were told different locations — at times Louisiana or Washington — before learning they were held in Phoenix, De Bremaeker said, describing conflicting reports.
- At a Friday, March 6 news conference, Tony Thurmond demanded the immediate return of the deaf 6-year-old, his 5-year-old sibling and their 28-year-old mother to California.
- Advocates said this is inhumane, illegal, and a violation of due process, as De Bremaeker said he will file emergency appeals through the weekend.
