Suzuki e-Sky Kei Car Makes Its Debut in Japan; Offers 310 km Range
- On Monday, Suzuki Motor unveiled a prototype of its first passenger electric "kei car," the e Sky, featuring a 310-kilometer reference range among the longest for electric minivehicles.
- While minicars are popular in Japan, EVs accounted for just over 1 percent of "kei" passenger vehicles sold in the first half of this year, with domestic rivals Nissan, Honda, and Mitsubishi already offering similar models and BYD entering last month.
- Nomura Securities analyst Kinoshita Toshihide said, "Many people in rural areas use 'kei cars,' but the number of gas stations is decreasing. One of the attractive selling points of EVs is that drivers can charge them at home."
- To address charging anxiety, the e Sky's navigation system recommends routes based on remaining range and traffic conditions. Suzuki achieved this long range through weight reduction and energy efficiency, expecting release within the fiscal year ending next March.
- Competition in Japan's electric minivehicle market is expected to intensify as Yokohama-based EMT, founded in 2025 by Autobacs Seven and Chery Automobile, plans market entry in 2027.
