Decisive Leader with Street Cred: Why BJP Chose Suvendu Adhikari as Bengal CM
Adhikari won the BJP Legislature Party vote after the party captured 207 of 293 assembly seats, ending 15 years of Trinamool rule.
On Friday, BJP Legislature Party leader Suvendu Adhikari was elected next chief minister of West Bengal. He will be sworn in on Saturday in Kolkata, ending 15 years of Trinamool rule.
Adhikari emerged as the 'giant-killer' of this year's election, leading the BJP to 207 victories in the 293-seat legislature, while the Trinamool Congress managed only 80 seats.
Once considered Mamata Banerjee's 'right-hand man,' Adhikari joined the BJP in 2020 after falling out with her nephew Abhishek; he rose to prominence leading the 2007 Nandigram land agitation that ended the 34-year Left reign.
The new chief minister defeated Mamata in her own borough of Bhabanipur, following his 2021 Assembly election victory in Nandigram where he wrested the seat by a slender margin.
Many BJP leaders consider him the party's 'aggressive' face, citing his strong grassroots network and ability to address local issues; what he does as chief minister now remains the next chapter.
The BJP has won the Bengal Assembly elections and is poised to form a government. The swearing-in date has been set for May 9th. Suvendu Adhikari, who defeated Mamata Banerjee twice from Nandigram, has now become a prominent figure in Bengal politics.
