Activist Sonam Wangchuk Refuses IV Fluids, Medication; Doctors Urge Him to Accept Treatment
Doctors say Wangchuk has low potassium and dehydration, while his wife is seeking his discharge and refusing treatment without consent.
- On Saturday, climate activist Sonam Wangchuk was admitted to Safdarjung Hospital after completing a 20-day hunger strike, where he is refusing all medical treatment including intravenous fluids despite medical advice.
- Wangchuk began his indefinite hunger strike on June 28 at Jantar Mantar, protesting alleged irregularities in the NEET examination, a cause supported by the Cockroach Janta Party.
- Gitanjali J Angmo, Wangchuk's wife, alleged a "lack of transparency" and requested his discharge, noting his potassium level dropped from 4.3 on July 17 to 2.9 by Saturday morning, calling the decline "surprising."
- Angmo requested discharge formalities be completed to shift Wangchuk to a medical facility of the family's choice, while Safdarjung Hospital stated he is being "continuously monitored" for treatment.
- Despite his hospitalization, Angmo asserted the planned protest march to Parliament scheduled for July 20 will proceed as planned, though the hospital maintains Wangchuk requires close monitoring to restore body parameters.
