Possible Tornado Causes Damages in Quebec’s Laurentians
Officials are confirming whether radar showed a brief tornado as crews reported forest, building and power-line damage and about 3,000 outages.
- On Tuesday, a suspected tornado struck Harrington, Quebec, causing widespread damage to forests and infrastructure. Environment Canada meteorologist Dominic Martel reported radar suggests the storm formed around 5:34 p.m. and ended near 5:44 p.m.
- Severe storms swept through the Laurentians on Tuesday afternoon, tracking from Bell Falls to Lake MacDonald. Harrington, positioned between these two points, bore the brunt of the weather system.
- Hydro-Québec reported about 3,000 customers in Harrington and Grenville-sur-la-Rouge lost power by 10:30 p.m. Tuesday. Photos from storm chasers at Xtrem Chase reveal extensive destruction to buildings, power lines, and forests.
- No injuries have been reported following the storm, though officials received multiple calls from residents describing broken tree branches and wind-damaged infrastructure. Harrington has a population of just over 900 people.
- Researchers at the Northern Tornado Project are reviewing radar data to confirm the event, while the municipality remains under assessment about 40 kilometres south of Mont-Tremblant. Further details will be released as they become available.
