Suspect Killed, Police Officer Injured in RI Boat Shooting
Police said Brendan Norris fired on officers from the sailboat, killing himself and leaving one Newport officer wounded in the leg.
On Wednesday, August 26, 2026, a shootout in Newport Harbor left a suspect dead and a Newport police officer injured after authorities responded to reports of a potentially stolen sailboat at North Anchorage.
The 40-foot 1968 Hinckley Bermuda was stolen from Liberty Harbor Marina in Jersey City late Saturday, prompting the Newport Harbormaster to spot the vessel anchored Wednesday morning.
As officers approached, the suspect fled below deck ignoring commands; Newport Police Chief Ryan Duffy said "The party armed himself with a firearm and shots were fired."
Police identified the deceased suspect as 27-year-old Brendan Norris of Newport, while the injured officer was released from Newport Hospital and is recovering at home.
Rhode Island State Police and the Rhode Island Attorney General's Office are conducting a "very active investigation," with Duffy noting the complexity of the scene; the yacht remains in police custody for owner Jim Bonomo.
