Security Guard Dead After Shooting by Police Officers in Gary, Indiana, State Police Say
Indiana State Police said officers from Gary and the Lake County Sheriff's Office were involved, and no ongoing threat remained to the public.
- On Friday night, Indiana State Police began investigating a fatal police-involved shooting in Gary, where 67-year-old security guard Kenneth Williams was killed near Broadway and 4th Avenue.
- Officers responded to the Adam Benjamin Metro Station around 10:54 p.m. following reports of an armed security guard displaying "unusual and erratic" behavior. Gary Police and Lake County Sheriff deputies attempted to de-escalate the situation.
- During the "confrontation," six Gary police officers and three Lake County Sheriff deputies discharged their weapons. Williams was pronounced dead at the scene, with no officers injured in the exchange of gunfire.
- All nine officers involved have been placed on administrative leave per agency policy. The Indiana State Police is not identifying the officers, deferring names to respective agencies.
- A forensic autopsy for Williams is scheduled for Tuesday in Crown Point, according to the Lake County Coroner. Both the preliminary cause and manner of death remain pending pending completion of the examination.
