Man Charged in Wild Ride that Ended with Semi-Truck Plunging Into Fraser River

  • On the night of May 14, James Robert Howard collided with an RCMP vehicle while driving a semi truck in Langley's Brookswood area before speeding away.
  • The chase began when Langley RCMP officers spotted the truck with mismatched plates and tried to stop it shortly after midnight on May 15.
  • Howard drove recklessly through Langley and Surrey, running red lights, overtaking vehicles, evading spike belts that deflated his front right tire, and eventually drove the truck into the Fraser River.
  • Sgt. Zynal Sharoom of Langley RCMP reported that as soon as officers turned on their emergency lights, the driver attempted to strike the police vehicles, resulting in the truck’s rear tires being completely shredded.
  • Howard now faces multiple charges including assaulting a peace officer and possession of stolen property over $5,000, and he awaits a May 21 bail hearing while held in pre-trial jail.
