Long Beach Police Officer Survives Stabbing; Man Arrested

Four federal air marshals helped arrest Arturo Fernandez, and police said the injured officer was released after treatment.

  • On Friday, a 44-year-old man was arrested in downtown Long Beach after allegedly stabbing a police officer multiple times. Authorities identified the suspect as Arturo Fernandez, a Torrance resident, and booked him at Long Beach City Jail for attempted murder.
  • Responding to a call in the 200 block of West Broadway at 2:42 p.m., officers encountered a suspect possibly armed with an unknown weapon. Investigators determined Fernandez was involved in a fight with several people before police attempted to de-escalate the situation.
  • Four Department of Homeland Security air marshals working a security assignment nearby witnessed the assault and rushed to assist. They helped officers take the suspect into custody at the scene, where investigators recovered a knife used in the stabbing.
  • Long Beach Police Chief Wally Hebeish confirmed the officer was released from the hospital and is expected to recover. The suspect remains in custody on $1 million bail, with the chief commending the marshals for their assistance.
  • Homicide detectives Juan Carlos Reyes and Lisette Temblador are investigating the assault, with the case to be presented to the Los Angeles County District Attorney's office next week. Anyone with information may contact the detectives at 562-570-7244.
