Georgia Officer Shot and Killed; Suspect Dead After Being Stopped in SC
Authorities said the suspect was found injured from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound after a manhunt that followed Fisher’s killing.
- On Tuesday night, Warm Springs Police Officer Chris Fisher was fatally shot around 11:57 p.m. while concluding an unrelated traffic stop at the Meriwether Country Inn, 5675 Spring Street, in Warm Springs, Georgia, when a black 2026 Chevrolet Silverado pulled alongside his patrol car and the driver fired multiple shots.
- Investigators identified the suspect as 23-year-old Jimmie Lee Steverson of Warm Springs, whom Fisher had arrested on Thursday, August 27 on felony charges including marijuana possession, firearm possession, and obstruction; Steverson was released on a $10,000 bond Friday, August 28.
- The Georgia Bureau of Investigation issued a statewide Blue Alert for Steverson, described as 5-feet-6-inches tall, weighing 150 pounds, with black locs and brown eyes, last seen wearing a black T-shirt and black gym shorts traveling in the 2026 Chevrolet Silverado.
- On Wednesday at approximately 11:39 a.m., Anderson County Sheriff Chad McBride reported that deputies stopped a vehicle near exit 27 on Interstate 85 in Anderson, South Carolina, discovering Steverson as a passenger after matching the suspect description from Georgia.
- As deputies approached the vehicle, Steverson shot himself, according to McBride; the suspect was transported to a Greenville hospital and pronounced dead from a self-inflicted gunshot wound, concluding the manhunt.
