Texas A&M Board Names Lone Finalist for University President
Ballabina would oversee 72,289 students and enforce new classroom rules limiting discussion of race and gender identity, officials said.
- On Monday, April 13, the Texas A&M University System Board of Regents appointed System Executive Vice Chancellor Susan Ballabina, Ph.D., as the sole finalist for president of the flagship campus.
- Ballabina will replace interim president Tommy Williams, a former Republican lawmaker who has led the university since October amid political scrutiny over academic freedom and curriculum restrictions.
- With over 30 years of service at the university and system, Ballabina has held senior leadership roles including Chief of Staff and Deputy Vice Chancellor for Texas A&M AgriLife.
- Leonard Bright, president of the American Association of University Professors chapter at Texas A&M, said he hopes Ballabina will defend "the freedom to teach, the freedom to learn" rather than serve as a "tool for the board."
- State law requires a 21-day waiting period before the appointment becomes official; Ballabina is set to lead the state's largest public university, which enrolled 72,289 students in fall 2025.
