Glasgow City Council Leader Susan Aitken to Step Down
Ricky Bell will take over as SNP group leader as Aitken stays on for four months to guide Glasgow through George Square works and the Commonwealth Games.
Glasgow City Council leader Susan Aitken announced she will step down in September after nine years leading the authority, with her formal resignation set for September 10.
Aitken led the Scottish National Party to its first Glasgow council victory in 2017 and oversaw the authority during the Covid pandemic and COP26 climate summit in 2021 before deciding against seeking reelection next year.
Deputy leader Cllr Ricky Bell assumed the role of SNP group leader immediately, with the party building momentum from last week's record fifth consecutive electoral victory.
Critics cite past controversies including expense claims totaling £7,867 and 2019 allegations of a "hostile environment" among councillors, though investigations into nepotism claims regarding her husband, Gordon Archer, found no conduct breaches.
Aitken will remain in post through summer to oversee completion of the £20m George Square redevelopment and the Commonwealth Games, describing the period as "momentous" for Glasgow before her September departure.
