‘Survival mode’: Indiana residents endure a ninth day without power
Tens of thousands of residents in northwest Indiana endured a ninth day without power, leading to food spoilage and the need for hot meals and phone charging stations.
Schools in Gary, Indiana remained closed following the deadly August 11 storm that caused extensive damage including downed trees and power lines.
Northern Indiana Public Service Co. reported that 68,000 customers, mostly in Lake County near the Illinois border, were still without power as of Thursday morning.
NIPSCO described the damage as "unprecedented and widespread," with crews from across the country assisting in repairs to downed wires and poles.
