Surrey Ugly Potato Day Sets Guinness Record for Produce Donation
The annual giveaway distributed 246,528.61 kg of produce and drew more than 30,000 people, organizers said.
On Saturday, Surrey's Ugly Potato Day set a Guinness World Record for the largest fruit and vegetable donation in 24 hours, distributing 543,501 lbs of produce at the Cloverdale Agriplex.
Founder Tyler Heppell launched the initiative in 2022 to distribute 'ugly' produce that would otherwise be discarded, growing from 12 initial attendees to over 30,000 participants this year.
Twenty-Five farms provided donations, with 70 percent originating locally, helping the event surpass the previous 2016 record of 493,977 lbs set by the Sacramento Convention & Visitors Bureau in California.
Motivational speaker Tony Robbins and Surrey Mayor Brenda Locke attended the event, with Robbins stating he was "moved" by the community effort to support residents in need.
Organizers plan to seek a larger venue for future iterations as the event continues growing, while any remaining produce will be distributed to local food banks.
