Action Initiated Against Five Temple Staff for Demanding Money From Devotees in Tiruchendur
Officials said two security personnel were removed and further action is pending against priests and staff after complaints of irregularities.
On Friday, TVK Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowments Minister Ramesh conducted a surprise inspection at the Arulmigu Subramaniya Swamy Temple in Tiruchendur, uncovering a bribery network for "speed darshan" that resulted in the suspension of five temple employees.
The Tiruchendur Murugan Temple frequently received complaints regarding alleged malpractice and poor crowd management. Wearing a mask to avoid recognition, Ramesh was approached by a priest who demanded Rs 4,000 for faster access, with staff suggesting online payment when he claimed to lack cash.
Inspections included the "annadhana koodam" and temple property records. Two security personnel from TEXCO were removed for accepting payments at the Shanmuga Vilasa Mandapam, while others were suspended for charging devotees for hair donation services.
Senior BJP leader Nainar Nagendran welcomed the action but questioned if officials beyond the suspended staff were involved. He urged the government to adopt online queue monitoring systems to bring Tiruchendur on par with Tirupati.
Ramesh asserted that strict action will be taken without bias against anyone involved, as the TVK government faces pressure to implement systemic departmental reforms rather than focusing solely on inspections. Further announcements regarding the review are expected soon.
