SC Bans Construction Activity Within 100 Metres From Edge of Rajasthan's Jojari River
The bench said the restrictions are needed to protect the riverine ecosystem while Rajasthan prepares scientific flood-line and buffer-zone demarcation.
- On Monday, August 24, 2026, the Supreme Court Bench of Justices Vikram Nath and Sandeep Mehta banned construction within 100 metres of the Jojari River in Rajasthan, also prohibiting hazardous industries within 500 metres of the river's flow path.
- To address ongoing contamination in the Jojari, Bandi, and Luni rivers, the Court previously ordered the State to constitute an Integrated Coordination Group headed by the chief secretary to coordinate mitigation efforts.
- Observing that the high flood line remains scientifically undetermined, the Bench mandated interim safeguards to protect the riverine ecosystem until formal demarcation of ecological buffer zones is completed.
- Clarifying the roles, the Bench noted the Integrated Coordination Group serves as an internal arrangement for coordination that does not diminish the authority of existing monitoring committees despite membership overlap.
- Future hearings are scheduled for September 22, as the Supreme Court suggested State authorities may eventually need to relocate industrial areas from the river bank for long-term ecological health.
