Democrats Run Against DeGette in Denver Congressional Race
Three super PACs have poured $1.3 million into ads backing Diana DeGette and attacking challenger Melat Kiros, a sign Democrats see the incumbent as vulnerable.
A trio of PACs dumped $1.3 million into Colorado's 1st Congressional District primary to protect Rep. Diana DeGette from Melat Kiros, a Democratic socialist political newcomer challenging the incumbent.
DeGette, first elected to Congress in 1996, has never faced such a concerted, well-funded primary challenge, signaling rare vulnerability for the three-decade incumbent against Kiros's insurgent campaign.
Mile High Accountability Project spent $350,000 on digital ads June 6, Project 218 spent $400,000 Wednesday attacking Kiros, and Pro-Choice Majority Action spent about $460,000 this week supporting DeGette.
Kiros denied allegations she supports defunding police, withdrawing from NATO, or abolishing the Senate, stating, "Denver voters are going to decide this race, not outside money, not special interests."
Voters will head to the polls on June 30 as Colorado's 1st Congressional District primary determines whether the PAC spending influences the outcome against Kiros's grassroots challenge.
