Supanova holds minute’s silence for man killed in car crash

  • On Saturday, a 33-year-old Werribee man allegedly drove a Toyota onto a footpath outside the Melbourne Showgrounds in Ascot Vale, killing a 20-year-old Keysborough man and injuring another as attendees departed the Supanova comic convention.
  • Police arrested the driver, who allegedly lacked a driver's licence, after an off-duty officer and a bystander detained him at the scene. Detective Inspector Craig McEvoy described the suspect as "well known to police."
  • The vehicle travelled 120 metres along the footpath before stopping. A second 20-year-old man remains in stable condition at the Royal Melbourne Hospital with lower body injuries, while a third group member was treated for trauma.
  • Organisers paused the Supanova convention for a minute's silence at noon on Sunday to honour the victims. Premier Jacinta Allan described the crash as a "tragic incident that should never have happened."
  • Charged with dangerous driving causing death and culpable driving, the accused appeared in Melbourne Magistrates Court on Sunday. Prosecutors said they need 16 weeks to gather evidence including CCTV, mechanical reports, and witness statements.
