Alberta Rodeo Bucks Parade over Disagreement About Float
The association said escalating threats and abusive messages left volunteers unable to safely organize the family-focused event.
On Monday, the Sundre Pro Rodeo and Race Association canceled Saturday's parade after volunteers faced intense online harassment and abusive messages directed at board members.
Organizers initially denied a pro-Alberta float, citing caution from a 2022 incident involving caricatures of former Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and former federal NDP leader Jagmeet Singh on a manure spreader.
Volunteers saw posts threatening to "hunt them down," according to Darby Crouch, spokesperson for the Sundre Pro Rodeo Association. Board members received threats and personal attacks on social media.
Town council stated they are "deeply disappointed" by the cancellation, noting volunteers should never face intimidation. The Sundre Pro Rodeo will proceed as planned this weekend with rodeo performances.
The future of next year's parade remains uncertain and depends entirely on whether volunteers feel comfortable returning to organize the community event after this harassment.
