Summit Fire in Southern California's Antelope Valley Prompts Evacuation Orders
Fire crews reported 0% containment as ten air tankers battled the blaze and evacuation orders expanded for nearby communities.
On Friday, the fast-moving Summit Fire ignited in the Antelope Valley community of Llano, rapidly expanding to 2,271 acres by evening and threatening occupied structures near the Los Angeles County and San Bernardino County line.
Fueled by dry brush and mid-90s temperatures, the fire erupted around 12:50 p.m. Friday near Jesus Canyon Road and East Avenue Z, quickly spreading south-southeast into the Angeles National Forest.
To combat extreme fire behavior, ten air tankers were dispatched to dump water and retardant on the blaze. As of 6 p.m. Friday, ground crews reported 0% containment.
Authorities issued mandatory evacuation orders for zones LAC-E107 and LAC-E127-C, urging residents to leave immediately. An emergency shelter opened at the Antelope Valley Family YMCA in Lancaster.
While no injuries have been reported, officials warn that occupied homes remain in the path of the flames. Smoke is expected to drift into the Mojave Desert as winds shift, according to the National Weather Service.
