Teenager Accused over Channel Crossing ‘Was Piloting Mega Dinghy’
Home Office figures show 366 people arrived in three boats on Thursday as Chan Mathok Atak was charged with endangering another passenger.
- On Thursday, Sudanese national Chan Mathok Atak, 19, was charged with endangering life after allegedly piloting a 42-foot "mega dinghy" carrying 165 migrants from France to England across the Channel.
- Border Security Command towed the vessel into Dover, Kent, after the crossing, as officials claimed smuggling gangs are increasingly using larger, unseaworthy boats to transport migrants.
- The 165 migrants aboard broke the previous record of 128 set in July, while 366 people arrived on Thursday overall, ending an 11-day hiatus caused by windy Channel conditions.
- Atak has been remanded in custody by the National Crime Agency and is scheduled to appear at Margate Magistrates' Court on Monday for his hearing.
