What Foreign Aid Cuts Mean for the World’s Worst Displacement Crisis
- The World Food Programme cautions that without new funding by the end of July 2025, it will have to halt all food aid to millions of individuals who have fled Sudan and are currently residing in seven bordering nations.
- This funding crisis follows over two years of civil conflict in Sudan that has forced more than 4 million refugees to flee to neighboring countries facing extreme food insecurity and insufficient shelter.
- WFP currently supports over 1.2 million refugees and host families with food, cash, hot meals, and nutrition programs, but funding shortfalls have reduced rations by 33 percent and caused beneficiary cuts.
- Shaun Hughes, WFP’s Emergency Coordinator, explained that while refugees escaping Sudan risk their lives, they often encounter severe food shortages, despair, and insufficient aid upon crossing into neighboring countries.
- Without urgent international mobilization of over $200 million for refugee support and $575 million for operations inside Sudan, famine risks and protection concerns for vulnerable populations will intensify.
