Sudan: Number of Severely Malnourished Children Doubles in North Darfur As Nutrition Crisis Deepens Across Sudan
SUDAN, JUL 14 – UNICEF reports a 46% increase in children treated for severe acute malnutrition in Darfur states amid conflict and blocked humanitarian aid access.
- Recent data across the Darfur region revealed over 40,000 SAM admissions in North Darfur in the first five months of 2025, doubling from last year.
- Last Tuesday, UN agencies reported that humanitarian access in North Darfur has been blocked, exacerbating the nutrition crisis and impeding aid delivery in Al Fasher and Zamzam camp.
- Malnutrition rates exceeded WHO emergency thresholds in nine of 13 localities, showing a widespread crisis across Sudan's states.
- In a stark warning, Sheldon Yett said `Children in Darfur are being starved by conflict and cut off from the very aid that could save them`, highlighting the urgent risk of worsening malnutrition without swift humanitarian action.
- Looking ahead, UNICEF calls for both funding and diplomatic pressure to address Sudan's worsening humanitarian crisis.
